Tips for Positive Parenting to Help Your Children Grow & Thrive

Niny’s Day Care & After School Care provides comprehensive day and after-school care services for children in Edmonton. We believe that knowledge is power, so on this page, you’ll find some helpful tips for positive parenting that will help your children grow and thrive!

Tips for Positive Parenting

Be Consistent – Children work hard to understand how their behaviour impacts the people around them. If your reaction to a recurring situation changes from one occasion to the next, you’ll confuse them with mixed signals and they will be unsure of the acceptable way to act.

Don’t Get Emotional – Angry reactions only enhance the entertainment value for a child, so resist the urge to raise your voice. Take a deep breath, count to three, and get down to your child’s eye level. Be swift and firm when you deliver your message.

Keep It Short and Simple – Speaking in short phrases, repeating the phrase, and incorporating vocal inflections and facial expressions allow a child to absorb what you are saying more effectively. Giving children options to choose from also aids their willingness to listen.

Know Your Child’s Triggers – Some misbehaviour is preventable; if you can anticipate what will spark an outburst you can then create a plan to deal with it, such as removing tangible temptations.

Niny’s Day Care and After School Care maintains an open door policy to parents. Anytime you want to talk, we’re available. We are happy to offer counseling to parents who may have a question or a concern. If you would rather use the parents’ communication book, you are welcome to share your questions, concerns, and feelings there. In addition, we are able to talk to the government about getting daycare subsidies approved. At Niny’s, we always strive to accommodate financial difficulties or emergencies.

Child-Pleasing Recipes to Try

Here are a couple of recipes for you to try out that are sure to please even picky eaters.

  • 1 ¼ cups flour
  • 1 tbsp. butter
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tbsp. milk powder
  • ½ cup water

Mix all ingredients and add water and shortening. Knead dough to form a smooth ball. Divide into 4 equal portions. Flatten each bannock cake and fry over medium heat in a greased pan. Turn when golden brown to cook the other side.

  • 3 medium zucchini, cut into sticks
  • 1 cup Panko brand breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 egg
  • salt and pepper to taste

Cut zucchini into eights strips. Beat the eggs and season with salt and pepper. In another plate, mix breadcrumbs, together with the parmesan cheese. Dip each zucchini stick in the egg wash, and then roll it through the breadcrumb mixture, making sure each stick is fully covered with the breadcrumbs. Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
